A switchboard upgrade in New Zealand costs $1,500 to $4,000 depending on the size and complexity. A basic upgrade from a ceramic fuse board to a modern switchboard with MCBs and RCDs costs $1,500 to $2,500. A larger upgrade for a four-bedroom home with additional circuits costs $2,500 to $4,000. Modern switchboards include Residual Current Devices (RCDs) that detect earth faults and disconnect the power in milliseconds, preventing electrocution. Upgrading your switchboard improves safety, prevents nuisance tripping, provides proper circuit protection, and is often required before installing new circuits (for an EV charger, heat pump, or hot tub, for example).

Your electrician will replace the existing fuse board or switchboard with a new board containing modern Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) for each circuit and Residual Current Devices (RCDs) for personal protection. The electrician may also separate circuits that are combined (common in older homes), add new circuits if needed, and label all circuits for easy identification.

Switchboard upgrades are prescribed electrical work and must be done by an EWRB-registered electrician. The upgrade must comply with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules. RCDs are now required on all power circuits and lighting circuits in new installations. After completing the upgrade, the electrician must issue a Certificate of Compliance. An electrical inspector may also need to inspect the work.
