Checking Tradie Qualifications in NZ

New Zealand has mandatory licensing for several key trades. Before hiring, verify your tradesperson is properly qualified:

Builders — Restricted building work (structural, weathertightness, fire safety) must be done by a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP). Check on the Building Performance website at building.govt.nz.

Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers — Must be registered with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). It is illegal for unregistered persons to do this work. Check on the PGDB website.

Electricians — Must hold a current practising licence from the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB). All electrical work (except changing light bulbs and appliance plugs) must be done by a registered electrician.

Painters, Landscapers & Others — No mandatory licensing, but look for relevant trade qualifications, association membership, and a track record of quality work on Call A Tradie.

Your Rights When Hiring a Tradie

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, all services provided by tradespeople must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, be fit for the intended purpose, be completed within a reasonable time, and be provided at a reasonable price.

For residential building work over $30,000, a written contract is required by law under the Building Act 2004. MBIE provides free standard contract templates on the Building Performance website.

If something goes wrong, you can take a claim to the Disputes Tribunal for disputes up to $60,000. It is a low-cost process that does not require a lawyer.
