Hiring a Plumber Checklist

All plumbers in NZ must be registered with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). Search the public register to confirm their name, registration class, and status.

Certifying plumber — can sign off work and supervise others. Licensed plumber — works unsupervised. Registered plumber — must work under supervision. For most household jobs, you want a certifying or licensed plumber.

If your job involves gas appliances or drainage, the plumber may need separate gasfitting or drainlaying registration. Check that they hold all required registrations.

PGDB registrations must be renewed each year. An expired licence means they are not legally allowed to do plumbing work. The public register shows the expiry date.

Plumbing work can cause water damage to your home. Public liability insurance protects you if something goes wrong. Ask for a minimum of $1 million cover.

Reputable plumbers guarantee their workmanship for at least 12 months. This is separate from any manufacturer warranty on parts and fittings.

For certain plumbing work (new installations, alterations), the certifying plumber must sign off the work and provide documentation. This is a legal requirement.

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, all services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, be fit for purpose, and be completed within a reasonable time.

Plumbing rates vary significantly. Get multiple quotes to understand the fair price. Be wary of quotes that are dramatically lower than others — it may indicate cut corners.

Hourly rates range from $90 to $150/hour plus GST. For larger jobs, a fixed-price quote provides certainty. Ask what happens if the job takes longer than estimated.

Most plumbers charge a callout fee of $150 to $280 covering travel and the first 30 to 60 minutes. After-hours and emergency rates are typically 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate.

Some plumbers mark up materials, others charge cost price plus labour. Ask for a breakdown so you can compare like-for-like between quotes.

Plumbers registered for GST must charge 15% GST. Always confirm whether quoted prices include or exclude GST to avoid surprises on the invoice.

Look for consistent feedback about punctuality, communication, quality of work, and fair pricing. A few negative reviews among many positives is normal.

A plumber who has done your type of job before (e.g., bathroom renovation, hot water cylinder install) will be more efficient and avoid common mistakes.

Master Plumbers members agree to a code of practice and offer a complaints resolution service. Membership is not required but signals professionalism.

Experience matters. A well-established plumbing business is more likely to stand behind their work and be available for warranty issues down the track.
